What are the parts of a TFT?
A Thin-Film Transistor (TFT) is a special kind of transistor commonly used in display technology, particularly in LCD screens. The main components of a TFT are:
Substrate: This is usually a glass or plastic base on which the TFT is built. It provides mechanical support to the entire structure.
Gate Electrode: This component controls the flow of electrical current. It is typically made of materials such as aluminum, chromium, or molybdenum.
Gate Insulator: A dielectric layer that separates the gate electrode from the other parts of the TFT. Common materials for this layer include silicon dioxide (SiO₂) or silicon nitride (SiNx).
Semiconductor Layer: This layer is where the actual switching happens. It is often made of amorphous silicon (a-Si), but other materials like polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) or organic semiconductors can also be used.
Source and Drain Electrodes: These electrodes are made of metals like aluminum or molybdenum. They are positioned on either side of the semiconductor layer and provide the path for the electric current.
Passivation Layer: A protective layer that covers the TFT to shield it from environmental factors like moisture and contaminants. It is typically made from silicon nitride or silicon oxide.
Pixel Electrode: In display applications, this electrode is connected to the TFT and is responsible for driving the individual pixels.
Interconnections: These are conductive paths that connect different TFTs to each other and to the driving electronics. They are usually made of metals like aluminum or copper.
